Passing the String Quartet*

After months of training and plans
the journey took me to the starting line
where I took my place
behind Olympians and stars
and we shared the desire
to conquer miles in good measure.
Pulses quickened after announcements
and the crack of the starter’s pistol
sent us on our way from the outdoor mall
to the string quartet at the one mile mark
and into a forest preserve with its minstrels.
We concentrated on pace and internal signals
when entertained and we engaged ourselves
with rises, dips and turns
the intimacies of the course
taken in many ways.
Back on the streets I passed the 10K mark
in near PR** pace and I knew
I was on the way to something special
while continuing with the human wave
the sea of lemmings running for redemption.
Hard miles spent my body for a dream
and cheerleaders cheered while puppets performed
but only I knew the meaning of my run.
I kicked to the end
to welcome a new ten-mile record
to be greeted with a beer and a slice of pizza
and the celebration of time.
